Maertz - And You EP [Anhura Records]

When you spend all day, everyday listening to music, you can see why its no surprise to why I have started a blog and writing the odd review. You think you've heard the best track of the week, then another one comes along and drops through the mail. This is a weekly, sorry, daily process for me and my inbox - so you can understand why I can't review them all. This weeks review comes from one of my new favourite labels - Anhura Records.

Maertz, a young producer from Barcelona gives Anhura it's 17th release, with his deep, techy summery vibes we can see why. The 'And You EP' contains two tracks and with their remixes they are a clear example of the artists sound and direction, from the off in 'And You' you find yourself drawn into the deep catchy groove, the arrangements are simple, as is the rest of the track, but with the addition of the vocal - you get hooked. Its simple layout is something I'm a fan of myself, but this just all slides into place and will be in my CD case for months to come. The remix comes from El Mundo & Satori and they provide the track with an atmosphere, quirky sounds and a deep consistency which runs through the track for the duration, perfect for very late nights in extremely dark rooms.

Next  up is 'Vilares' - this introduces us to Maertz's more uptempo side of his talents, grooving percussion from the start, a riding hi hat and a looping synth stab that makes it to a more danceable and dance-floor oriented track. The originals breakdown is my favourite part of this track, a real build up - which would get a 'hands in the air' reaction, different from his other track - but sure to have you dancing. Miguel Lobo & Andre Butano slow things down with their remix, a deep, bumpy, soft chorded track. It's one of them tracks that just make you tap your feet and nod your head, but as we all know - their the types of tracks that make a crowd work.

Tom Taylor & Gareth Whitehead - One Love EP [Lost My Dog]

Long before I was signed to Lost My Dog (LMD) or even producing, LMD has been one of my favourite labels of all time. Its no nonsense quality house music on a regular and consistent basis has been the foundation to all the reasons and more to why I started my own label and pushed to get my own work on the label itself, but enough about all that, this is a EP review - haha.

We roll up to the 52nd release
on the label and Gareth Whitehead is on form once again, his second release on LMD in as many months, but this time he teams up with 2020 Vision artist Tom Taylor for a pairing that will ask the question of househeads and DJ's - "Whens their next release?"

The original of 'One Love' is a sexy deep number, easy to the ear keys, cool stabs, grooving bassline and a female vocal that will hypnotise you (think mermaids calling ships at sea into the rocks). The first remix comes from Pete Dafeet, taking the track and making it into a more peaktime house-y number, sliding the vocal across the riding hi hats and percussion with a smooth bubbling bassline as it builds up to the breakdown, but its from the breakdown onwards were you get the full groove, full use of the vocal and everything that was building up from the start, just fits nicely into place. Howard Sessions completes the remixes for 'One Love', stripping back the track to a basic kick, clap, shuffling percussion, synth stab, bumpy bassline, looping vocal and more use of the piano - quality house music done to its best.

Deep, dubby, nicely pitched vocals, hypnotic melodies on a techy edge is what best describes 'On A Tip', the second track on the EP, the original is just that. Lay down some quirky fx and sounds and a more driving bassline and you have a track to groove you all the way into 4am. The remix comes from Phil Weeks, who needs no introduction. His uptempo percussion, catchy groove, jacked up house beats, heartbeat pounding bass, add the twist to this track and makes it float along like a duck in water.

An introduction to my blog...

Can you remember everything you've done in the last 12 months? I suppose I can remember about 75% of the last 12 months, the highs and the lows, but that's life. We have to deal with everything that's thrown at us and so much more (whether its good or bad), plus with facebook and other social sites wanting to know more and more personal information about you, I thought why not just write about what I do on a daily, weekly, monthly basis - haha.

So from now on I'm going to document everything I do (well most things, I can't let you know about everything in my life - haha), but I can at least tell you more about my gigs, tours, record label, radio show and new projects, whether it be an original, a collaboration or a remix. Plus I'm going to start reviewing the promos I receive from all the labels I work with and many more, so you can have some heads up on good quality house and techno that you might miss out on as its not produced by the big names.

Here's to a new beginning.
